Get to know 20-year-old Ollie Davies who debuted for Thunder this season and is an avid surfer
When did you first learn to surf?
I was 6 or 7 years old.
I’d go down to Curl Curl, which is my local beach and I’ve grown up there my whole life. Dad would just sort of push me onto waves and I’d just try to stand up basically.
Why do you enjoy surfing?
I just love it, just being out there in the water, it’s so relaxing. It takes my mind off things which is really good.
Best surfing location you’ve been to?
I have surfed Snapper Rocks up on the Gold Coast a couple of times. Last year, I went on a surfing trip last year to Taveuni, which is a little island off Fiji.
And surfed a spot called Maqai, which is a very famous surfing spot over in Fiji.
Sort of been talking to a few mates and my Dad about hopefully going to New Zealand and doing a bit of a road trip of the North Island, that would be pretty sick. I’ve heard there are some good spots over there, it can just get a bit ‘Sharky’.
Any team mates that surf?
Ben Cutting body boards and Chris Green long boards occasionally as well.
Best time of the day to surf?
Everyone says morning but I like to surf at dusk.
Everyone heads home from work anywhere from 3-5pm and they’ll go out for an hour or two to surf. I reckon about 7pm onwards in the summer, for me, that’s the best time to surf.
The wind usually dies right off, the water is so nice and there’s hardly anyone out there.
What was it like making your Thunder debut this season?
It was an amazing experience.
Surprisingly enough I have actually been a bit more nervous in the last few games. Coming into the tournament, no one really knew who I was and I guess I had that fearless mind-set going into those first few games.
At the start of the tournament, I honestly didn’t think I was going to get a go, it was quite a shock, but an awesome experience to make my debut.
Who presented you with your cap?
Chris Green.
We played for a few years together at Manly-Warringah. Chris and I have been good friends for a while now.
He had some very nice words to say, to “just go out there and back myself” was one of the main things he said. It was very nice of him.
