Callum Ferguson to leave club after four seasons in green

Sydney Thunder captain Callum Ferguson will leave the Club following four seasons at Sydney Showground Stadium.

After joining Sydney Thunder in 2017, Ferguson played a total of 53 matches. In the last two summers he’s successfully led the team to back-to-back berths in the BBL’s play-off finals.

Ferguson finishes as Thunder’s second highest run-scorer after compiling a total of 1,325 runs at an average of 30.11 and strike rate of 126.19. During BBL|08 he recorded the highest individual score in the club’s history by hitting an unconquered 113 against the Perth Scorchers.

Sydney Thunder coach Shane Bond described the decision to not offer 36-year-old Ferguson a contract for next summer as “tough”.

“In the two-years Callum was Sydney Thunder’s captain I found him fantastic to work with,” said Bond. “What viewers see on the television is what you get with him: he’s affable, articulate, calm, and extremely popular.

“The calming influence he’s had over the squad during the last couple of years has been very important.

“Above all, Callum is a great team man. In the two-years we’ve worked side-by-side we’ve shared some great moments, including our qualifying for the last two play-offs under his captaincy.”

Sydney Thunder General Manager Chris Botherway thanked Ferguson for the impact he’s made on and off the field.

“There are boys and girls in Western Sydney, Regional NSW and ACT who have grown up with Callum Ferguson as their favourite cricket player,” said Botherway.

“This is testament to Callum’s great leadership qualities and his desire to inspire the next generation to play the sport we love.

“Callum will forever be a friend of our Club and wish him well in the future.”
