Cricket Ireland: JJ Garth on the Wolves first match and the upcoming fixtures

Bangladesh – Ireland Wolves leg-spinner JJ Garth believes the learnings from the first match on tour gives the bowling unit a sense of optimism for the white ball series.

Garth claimed 2-48 from 12 overs in the Bangladesh Emerging XI’s only innings in the recent four-day game, but believes his side has benefitted greatly from the run out.

Speaking from the team hotel, he said:

“The four-dayer was obviously a very tough game in foreign conditions. It was the first four-dayer in a long time for a lot of the squad, so it was definitely a good runout. Harry Tector and Curtis Campher were good with the bat and Mark Adair really led the bowling. It wasn’t the result we were looking for but plenty of positives for us to take leading into the white ball games.”

“Last match was the first time bowling in a competitive game in a few months, so it felt really nice to get out there. I didn’t quite feel at my best at the crease, but was really good to get a bowl out in the middle. After the match we definitely have a better feel for conditions, and I think the bowlers can nail the basics for longer in the upcoming series – when we did that, we showed we were very much in the game. The conditions here are quite similar to Sri Lanka, where we toured in 2019, in that it very much facilitates spin. However, I think the Bangladesh pitch for the four-day game offered a little bit more for the seamers than Sri Lanka did.”

“Looking forward, I think the spinners are going to have a big influence throughout the white ball games. We just need to execute our plans and be very consistent with the ball.”
