Cricket Scotland and funding partner Beyond Boundaries have announced the first three clubs to be accepted into the Disability Cricket Champion Clubs (DCCC) Programme.

Dumfries Cricket Club, Strathmore Cricket Club, and Westquarter & Redding Cricket Club will become the first Scottish clubs to receive support from the programme which is also currently being rolled out by the ECB in England.

Funding provided by Beyond Boundaries will support the clubs to open their gates and deliver cricket opportunities for those with disabilities by providing guidance, resources, and equipment, enabling them to welcome individuals with additional needs and varying abilities to support them to play cricket, follow the game, officiate, and volunteer.

Every Disability Cricket Champion Club will receive a free kit bag containing playing equipment and a range of balls and markers to help facilitate coaching drills and games, along with support from Cricket Scotland to promote and deliver their inclusive cricket sessions.

Cricket Scotland Chief Executive Gus Mackay said: “We have been really pleased with the interest from clubs across Scotland in becoming part of the Disability Cricket Champion Club programme. Alongside the three selected, we have many more clubs who will work with our National Disability Officer over the next 12 months to ensure they are ready to be selected next year.

“Access to adapted and easy to use equipment can play a crucial role in enabling coaches to ensure that everyone is involved and able to enjoy the game, so we know that this, along with the in person support they will receive, will allow clubs to provide even more opportunities for disabled people in Scotland to take part in cricket.”

Keith Wilson, Chair of Beyond Boundaries said: “Beyond Boundaries is delighted to provide the sponsorship to enable this Disability Cricket Champions Club Programme in Scotland.

“Beyond Boundaries is a young Scottish charity that has begun transforming lives through funding programmes which bring cricket, in any of its forms, to young, disadvantaged and underrepresented people in Scotland. Examples to date include supporting activities that increase participation for women and girls with the emphasis on exercise and fun and support of Cricket Scotland’s award-winning Project Glasgow, funding tailored participation programmes for 5 to 18-year-olds in socially deprived areas of Glasgow.

“We are therefore delighted to support this Disability Cricket Champions Club Programme to help break down barriers to participation for people with disabilities. Congratulations to the selected clubs in 2021 – you are all worthy winners and Beyond Boundaries looks forward to supporting other clubs in future years too.”

We’ll be profiling all three of the clubs this week so keep an eye on the website and on Cricket Scotland social media for more.
