The Melbourne Renegades weren’t letting lockdown get in the away of inspiring the next generation of cricketers and Gades fans, participating in a virtual ‘roadshow’ last week to the delight of regional schools around the state.
As part of the “Renegades Regional Roadshow”, WBBL and BBL players virtually called classrooms in Bendigo, Geelong, Colac, and Western Country after the in-person Roadshow was cancelled due to COVID-19.
To help launch Play Cricket Month, the players took around 325 students through fun at-home cricket activities, were asked some hairy questions by students in a Q&A session, and then delivered a message of support from the Melbourne Renegades family regarding the current lockdown status in Victoria.
WBBL and Australian star player Sophie Molineux said she enjoyed the virtual visit to Geelong/Colac area alongside BBL player Sam Harper and her teammate Josie Dooley.
“It was such a shame we couldn’t hit the road and visit the students in person, however, we still enjoyed the virtual calls and loved seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces.
“Cricket is at the heart of so many of these communities, and after a rough 18 months, hopefully getting out on the cricket field will bring some joy to the community.
“Play Cricket Month is the perfect opportunity to try your hand at cricket and most importantly get out and have some fun with friends!”
After the cancellation of the physical Roadshow, GM of Melbourne Renegades James Rosengarten, said it was important that the Club found a way to connect with the regional communities.
“The regional communities are the heart and soul of cricket in Victoria – we wanted to ensure the Renegades were showing their support and connecting with the schools.
“It’s a tough time for all and we hope the players inspired the next generation of Renegades fans and potential future Team Red WBBL and BBL players.
“We would love to see many of the community getting involved during Play Cricket Month, it provides opportunities to learn new skills and have fun with new friends at the same time.”
The Renegades Regional Roadshow was part of the launch for Play Cricket Month, which will take place throughout September. Play Cricket Month is all about getting involved at local Clubs and highlighting some of the inspiring stories within the Victoria Cricketing community.
