South African international, Mignon Du Preez, is the latest big-name player to join the Hobart Hurricanes, with the 32-year-old top-order batter signing on for WBBL|07.

Du Preez crosses Bass Strait from WBBL|06 finalists, the Melbourne Stars, where she has thus far played the entirety of her Women’s Big Bash League career.

From being a foundation player for the Stars in 2015, Du Preez went on to play a subsequent four consecutive seasons with the Stars, from 2017 to 2021.  In WBBL|06 alone, Du Preez made 380 runs across the 13 innings she spent at the crease – including four half centuries – at an impressive strike rate of 122.58.

At the international level, Du Preez is a mainstay of the South African team, having represented her country in 108 T20 Internationals, 137 One-Day Internationals, and one historic Test Match to date.  Du Preez has made a massive 5,312 runs across all three formats of the game, and also captained her country for the best part of five years, before electing to step down the role in order to be able to focus more on her batting.

No stranger to the world of short-form domestic cricket having just finished a stint playing for the Manchester Originals in the inaugural season of The Hundred, Du Preez has now assembled with the South African squad in Antigua and Barbuda, where her side will play three T20Is and five ODIs against the West Indies.

“I’m really looking forward to starting this new chapter playing with the Hurricanes,” Du Preez said from the Caribbean.

“I’ve obviously loved my time playing with the Stars but am really looking forward to this new challenge with the Hurricanes.  From afar, the Hurricanes have been running a great program for several years now and have been building a great list over the off-season, so I can’t wait to experience it for myself.

“It’s a great competition the WBBL, involving the best group of female cricketers in the world.  I think with the team the Hurricanes have built for this season, combining both old and new faces, we will really have the opportunity to make a statement on-field this year.”

Du Preez joins Nicola Carey, Maisy Gibson, Rachel Priest, Chloe Rafferty, Amy Smith, Naomi Stalenberg, Molly Strano, Rachel Trenaman, Belinda Vakarewa and Tayla Vlaeminck as the players announced as being contracted to the Hurricanes for WBBL|07.

Du Preez is the Hurricanes second of three international signings to be announced for WBBL|07, with Rachel Priest also qualifying as an international player.
