Ashraful Aid in partnership with Lions Cricket are ready to get their braai stands out on Friday, 24 September 2021, at the iconic Imperial Wanderers Stadium as they aim to braai and donate 5000 burgers on the day.

Braai’d by volunteers, the burgers will be donated to various charities, communities and cricket clubs. The two organisations are calling for a donation support of R20 for a burger.

Ashraful Aid Executive Director, Moulana Suhail Wadee shared; “Every day we are out in communities, we are constantly reminded of the many who don’t even know where their next meal will come from. So, while some South Africans will be enjoying a good old South African braai on National Braai Day, Braai for Charity is an initiative that allows us to not only provide a meal for thousands of families, but also to let them share a little of the Braai Day experience and shine a spotlight on the plight of so many children who go hungry every day.”

The Braai for Charity initiative kicks off Ashraful Aid’s annual Donate A Plate campaign which supports the UNICEF Global Goal of Zero Hunger and aims to reduce hunger amongst the most vulnerable. Donate A Plate will continue with various community feeding initiatives over the next three months. Although COVID restrictions has limited the size of the Braai For Charity event this year, Ashraful Aid hopes to grow this initiative into an annual event across the country next year.”

Forming part of their annual poverty alleviation programme, which was established at the onset of the pandemic, Lions Cricket Marketing and Communications Manager Wanele Mngomezulu says that the Union are excited at the joyous day ahead.

“As the Lions Cricket family, our new brand proposition speaks to One Team, One Stadium, One City of Gold. Essentially that means that we are collectively One Team, coming together at the iconic and multi-purposeful Imperial Wanderers Stadium, reaching out to our city: A city full of hope, aspiration, and challenges. Challenges that we as a collective can address and overcome. We’re thrilled and humbled to continue our partnership with the Ashraful Aid Humanitarian Organisation on such a profound day. Many of us take for granted a simple enjoyment of the concept of the ‘braai day’ yet millions of our communities struggle to enjoy a meal on such a joyous occasion.”
