The NSW cricket season will officially commence on Saturday, October 23, with a number of Cricket NSW affiliated associations scheduling competitive fixtures for this weekend.

Following prolonged lockdowns in many parts of the state during the winter months, the return of community sport from Monday (October 18) has enabled associations and clubs to confirm their respective plans for cricket programs, competitions, and leagues during what will be a huge summer of domestic and international cricket.

With over 440,000 participants in cricket programs last summer across NSW and the ACT, including nearly 200,000 in club, indoor and school competitions, the resumption of cricket for the 2021-22 summer is very welcomed news.

“It’s been a challenging four months for the entire state and people are desperate to get back to some normalcy. Cricket is a very special sport, it not only delivers mental and physical health benefits but it’s truly a sport for all; It’s inclusive, it’s safe and often a cricket club is at the heart of a community and brings people together like no other sport,” Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said.

“The prompt start of the new cricket season could not have happened without the hard work of Cricket NSW staff, our wonderful clubs and associations, and their army of volunteers whose tireless endeavours over recent weeks have enabled a COVID-safe return to cricket.

“We are delighted to see a number of affiliated associations opening their respective cricket season this weekend, with most associations and leagues following in early to mid-November.

“Cricket is Australia’s most popular summer sport. Whether you play every year, haven’t played for a while, or are brand new to cricket – there is a cricket program and competition to suit allcomers, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the cricket family this summer,” Germon concluded.
