Cricket and art will cross paths tonight at the CitiPower Centre in St Kilda.
The Melbourne Stars and Cricket Victoria are hosting a new exhibition called “The Art of Cricket” – a selection of works completed by Victorian and Melbourne Stars player Sophie Day.
23-year-old Day holds a Bachelor of Fine Art in addition to her cricket abilities and has produced 30 artworks which will go on display at tonight’s launch.
The exhibition, the first of Day’s work, will remain in place until early January.
Day said she was looking forward to launching the showcase.
“It’s exciting and pretty nerve-wracking at the same time. While cricket is a pretty big part of my life now, I loved my art studies and have been painting for some time now. It’s a really important creative outlet for me and a great change of pace to cricket,” Day said.
“The theme of this exhibition is the Art of Cricket. For me, the connection between what we strive for as athletes and what I strive to be as an artist is connected. It’s a demonstration of ourselves – and the exacting standards we hold ourselves to and others do too.”
“I’d like to thank everyone at the Stars and CV for their support. It has been really nice to see this come together and to have so many people wanting to make it happen,” Day said.
Day plays at Prahran Cricket Club and made 10 appearances for the Melbourne Stars during the recent Weber WBBL season.
Melbourne Stars General Manager Blair Crouch said it was a great opportunity to celebrate talents beyond sport.
“Sophie has a wonderful story to tell and a unique gift with her abilities in art. We’re delighted to be able to launch this exhibition with her tonight and to see the CitiPower Centre transformed into an artistic space for December,” Crouch said.
The Art of Cricket is hosted in the CitiPower Centre’s main reception area until January 5.
