Victorian off-spinner Todd Murphy has joined the two-time defending KFC BBL champion Sydney Sixers as an injury replacement for veteran Steve O’Keefe.

Murphy, who grew up on the NSW/Victoria border town of Moama, trained with his new club today and will be part of the Sixers’ squad for Tuesday night’s big clash against the Adelaide Strikers at the SCG.

O’Keefe has a calf strain and is looking to return to the Sixers in coming weeks. His injury comes off the back of a BBL-season ending neck injury to fellow spinner Ben Manenti.

Sixers head coach Greg Shipperd said 21-year-old Murphy joins the squad after a prolific junior and pathways career where he was a member of the Australian squad at the 2020 Under 19 Cricket World Cup alongside the likes of rising BBL stars Tanveer Sangha, Ollie Davies and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

“Todd has been doing good things for a number of years through his teens and last season made his List A and First Class debuts for Victoria,” Shipperd said.

“He has a thirst for cricket knowledge and the craft of off-spin.

“We look forward to him contributing to the Sixers on and off the field while he substitutes for Steve O’Keefe.”

The Sixers sit atop the BBL ladder with three wins from their opening four matches and play the Strikers on Tuesday at home before a massive Boxing Day Sydney Smash against the Thunder at Sydney Showground Stadium.
