Having spent so much time in the Nation’s Capital, Nathan McAndrew is sharing his top 5 things to do in Canberra for fans who are making the trip to the city for the Thunder’s clash with the Scorchers at Manuka Oval

Nathan McAndrew is no stranger to Canberra.

As well as a handful of games with Sydney Thunder over the last few years, the bowler has also spent time there with the ACT/NSW Country Future’s league team.

“We’re looking forward to playing at Manuka Oval and playing in front of the Thunder Nation,” said McAndrew.

“They’ve always been so good to us in Canberra, we can’t wait to get down there and hopefully get a really good crowd behind us.”

Having spent so much time in the Nation’s Capital, McAndrew is sharing his top 5 things to do in Canberra for fans who are making the trip to the city for Thunder’s game at Manuka Oval on Tuesday 28 December.

Cafes

Canberra’s coffee scene is very busy, with most suburbs across the city home to at least one cafe serving delicious food and top quality coffee.

Macca says: TYPICA in Manuka has always been a favourite for me when I have been down in Canberra for Big Bash and Futures League games. Their Black Betty coffee is fantastic.

Walk around Lake Burley Griffin

The lake Canberra is built around is surrounded by a walking and cycling path that stretches roughly 30 kilometres with galleries, museums, a zoo and aquarium, the Arboretum, scenic wetlands, cafes and breweries all along the way. The most popular part of the lake is the ‘bridge to bridge’ walk, a 5km loop in the centre of the city between Commonwealth Bridge and Kings Avenue Bridge.

Macca says: There’s nothing better than having a good stroll around the lake, it reminds me of being back home near Lake Illawarra. I always enjoy getting out for some exercise near the water.

Questacon

Questacon is the National Science and Technology Centre. The innovative exhibitions and programs, with their interactive and colourful galleries make this a top visit for everyone in the family.

Macca says: I have fond memories of going across to Questacon on school excursions, there’s so much to see and do in there, and I actually learned a thing or two while I was there!

Wineries

The Canberra Wine District is less than half an hour out of Canberra’s CBD, with more than a dozen of the regions best wineries sprinkled within a few kilometres of each other. Most offer cellar door tastings, delicious food and some have plenty of outdoor seating with live music as the weather warms up.

Macca says: Four Winds Winery is an outstanding afternoon out, with plenty of great wine and woodfired pizzas, as well as a great outdoor area to sit and listen to some music on the weekend.

Golf

Whether you are an aspiring pro, or a weekend warrior, Canberra has all levels of golfer covered.

More than a dozen pristine golf courses are sprinkled across the nation’s capital, with enthusiastic players encouraged to throw the clubs in for a weekend in the ACT. The Canberra International Golf Centre in Narrabundah also has a driving range, putt putt course and a full 18-hole pitch and putt course for the whole family to enjoy.

Macca says: During last year’s Big Bash, Royal Canberra became our home away from home. We spent as much time there as we spent at Manuka Oval! With all the COVID restrictions, it was a good way to get out of the hotel and enjoy some time outdoors.

Tickets are now on sale, with family-friendly prices starting from $5 for kids, $25 for adults and $50 for families. Click here to buy now.
