Talented young all-rounder Mitchell Owen will don purple for at least the next two seasons, signing a multi-year deal that keeps him in hometown Hobart – the fifth re-signing of the off-season for the Hurricanes.

At just 20 years of age, ‘Canes fans witnessed glimpses of Owen’s vast potential and power throughout KFC BBL|11.  Appearing five times in the middle order, Owen finished with a high score of 16 which included three boundaries, and best figures of 2-25 with the ball against the Brisbane Heat which helped secure a win.

A Hurricane now for two full seasons, Owen’s growth and development have been evident, and with seven BBL appearances now under his belt, the youngster said he is keen to keep making improvements year on year.

“Building upon my first season, spending more time out in the middle this past summer and getting the ball in hand and taking a couple of wickets, it felt really good and hopefully it’s just the start of what I can continue to bring to this team,” Owen said.

“As a young player, it’s awesome to be able to keep working on my skills and play in my home state. We’ve got a great program here and knowing that I have at least two more seasons to keep learning in this environment is really good.

“With a lot of high quality young players like Riley, Wil and Caleb also re-signing and committing to this team, we know that if we keep this core group together and put the work in, we can be really dangerous over the next few seasons.”

Cricket Tasmania’s General Manager of High Performance, Simon Insley, said locking in young and versatile players like Owen places the club in good stead for the coming seasons.

“Mitch is someone who can come out and be really dangerous for us with both the bat and the ball, and at 20, he’s only just scratching the surface of what he can do.”

“We’re really excited to help him continue to take those steps to develop his cricket and see the results of that out on the pitch for us in the next couple of seasons.”

Owen joins Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Joel Paris, Wil Parker, D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade as Hurricanes currently signed for BBL|12.
