Cricket Scotland Development & Live Active, Perth & Kinross are pleased to announce the inauguration Tailend Tapeball Event.

The event will take place on the 10th April 2022 at Bell’s Sport centre Perth, commencing at 10am. Nine teams from all over the Caledonia South area will be competing in a fun, fast paced, exciting and inclusive format of cricket, known as tapeball.

The aim of the event is to engage a variety of clubs that may not always play against each other during the regular session. As we begin to re-establish normality, after a difficult two years due to the pandemic, this format of event lets a number of different back grounds get together in a social situation whist playing the sport we all love.

I would like to thank the Tailend Dundee & St Andrews who have generously supported us in organising and running the competition. The sponsorship of the event from the local business has allowed for specialist equipment to be purchased and hall costs partially covered reducing the costs to the participants significantly.

The Tailend is an award-winning seafood restaurant & takeaway situated in the heart of St Andrews and Dundee. It is popular with golfers, tourists, students and locals. The tailend pride themselves on their fresh seafood and local produce. The restaurant is owned by Arbroath local fish mongers G&A Spink, who supply all the fish, fresh daily, including their famous hot smocked salmon and Arbroath ‘smokies’. These are a must try for any fish lover!

As well as offering casual dining in their fantastically warm and welcoming venue, The Tailend also offer event nights where students can celebrate graduations with bespoke celebratory menus. Further, their magnificent restaurant allows tourist and golfers the perfect opportunity to experience The Tailend’s famous ‘Traditional fish, chips, mushy peas & tartar sauce’ and all the magical seafood that Scotland has to offer, such as local lobster, langoustines, halibut and hake to name a few.

On the day we are lucky enough to have The Tailend join us at Bell’s Sport Centre where they will be bringing along several tasty dishes for players and spectators to sample.

A massive thank you to The Tailend for making this event possible

Why tapeball is an important format within cricket?

The innovation of tape ball cricket began in Karachi, Pakistan in the 1960s where proper equipment, pitches and grounds are a luxury. Informal cricket games are played widely by children and young adults across the cricket-playing world, especially in South Asia. Local grounds, parks and city streets are common locations to find locals playing the games in afternoons and evenings. The tape ball format provided a solution to a vexing issue for these cricket enthusiasts and one we believe will also work in our increasingly diverse country.

Cricket Scotland’s Community Engagement Manager Ammar Ashraf commented “These are exciting times for Cricket Scotland, especially over the winter months. Through research and the consultation process I was amazed at the level of demand there was for this type of social cricket.

A great way to get back into the game or for fans of cricket which will hopefully create a “Tapeball” following in Scotland. There is also a pathway for those who want to progress their skills further. I am confident this will raise the profile of the game in Scotland but act as a catalyst to greater levels of participation making it the most diversely played sport in Scotland!”
