Cricket South Africa (CSA) extends its well-wishes to the Momentum Proteas stars that will be featuring in the Women’s T20 Challenge taking place at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, India from 23 – 28 May 2022.
Suné Luus, who captained South Africa at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year, will be representing the Supernovas, while the impressive duo of Ayabonga Khaka and Laura Wolvaardt will turn out for the Velocity.
The fourth edition of the T20 tournament, which is widely seen as the precursor to the Women’s Indian Premier League (IPL), is made up of three teams, namely the Supernovas, Trailblazers, and the Velocity, and will feature a combination of Indian cricketers and a total of 12 international players.
Luus goes into the competition off the back of recent success in the shortest format after lifting the inaugural FairBreak Invitational title with the Tornadoes in Dubai earlier this month. In the same tournament, Khaka etched her name in the history books with the Spirit, when she picked up FairBreak’s first ever five-wicket haul, while Wolvaardt continued her fine form with two half-centuries for the Barmy Army.
On Khaka, Luus and Wolvaardt’s Women’s T20 Challenge adventure, CSA Chief Executive, Pholetsi Moseki commented:
“It is undeniable that our players belong in the top echelons of world cricket and their involvement in tournaments around the world will always be a moment of pride for CSA and South African cricket fans at large.
“Suné, Ayabonga and Laura have already had an incredible year and the sky is the limit for how the rest of 2022 will progress, both for the Momentum Proteas and their various domestic teams.
“The trio’s ability on the cricket field, as well as their commitment, passion and their notable contributions wherever they go serves as great inspiration for their peers as well as any aspiring young girls who want to follow in their footsteps,” Moseki added.

The tournament gets underway on Monday, 23 May, with the first match taking place between the Supernovas and the Trailblazers from 16h00 (SA time).
