PCA: May Player of the Month votes open

Brook and Jones lead the Men’s and Women’s rankings for May.

The four best men’s and women’s domestic players have been announced for the PCA’s Player of the Month award for May.

Yorkshire’s Harry Brook, Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones, Worcestershire’s Jack Haynes and Lancashire’s Keaton Jennings have been nominated for their performances in May.

Central Sparks’ Amy Jones, South East Stars’ Aylish Cranstone, Thunder’s Emma Lamb and Southern Vipers’ Danni Wyatt have been nominated for the Women’s award.

Men’s PCA Player of the Month

The players are selected by the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings, which picks out the game’s top performers across each competition, as well as a month by month table and overall rankings.

The MVP takes into account batting, bowling and fielding contributions as well as match defining contributions using a unique algorithm developed with CricViz.

The PCA Player of the Month is decided by public vote on thepca.co.uk – with the poll closing on Wednesday 8 June at 11am.

Below is a breakdown of the achievements of the top four men’s players in the table for the month of May:

Harry Brook (Yorkshire)

Leading the way with an impressive 132 in May’s MVP table is Yorkshire’s Harry Brook. The 23-year-old has earned a call up to the England Test squad for the first time due to his fabulous start to the season.

Brook has scored 840 first-class runs in the LV= Insurance County Championship at an average of 140, including a career best 194 against Kent in April.

His good form has continued into the Vitality Blast scoring 161 runs in three innings, including 72 in a tied Roses derby.

Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex)

Sitting second on May’s MVP table with 117 points is Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones. The 34-year-old has had a brilliant month which included taking match figures of 10-107 at Lord’s against Durham which won him the Match MVP and added an incredible 59 points to his tally.

Only Matthew Potts has more than Roland-Jones’ 30 first-class wickets this season. His form has continued into the Vitality Blast taking 4-22 against Glamorgan.

Jack Haynes (Worcestershire)

Worcestershire’s Jack Haynes takes third place in May’s standings just a point behind Roland-Jones on 116. Haynes made his maiden first-class hundred this month scoring 120 not out against Durham.

The 21-year-old went on to score two more first-class hundreds in May including 133 against Derbyshire which earned him the Match MVP and 33 points. He scored 402 runs in May and averaged 134 in first-class cricket.

His formed continued into the Vitality Blast scoring 61 in Worcestershire’s first game against Yorkshire.

Keaton Jennings (Lancashire)

Completing May’s top four on 109 points is Keaton Jennings of Lancashire. In just three first-class matches Jennings scored two hundreds including a career best against Yorkshire of 238 which won him the Match MVP and 49 points towards his total.

The former England Test opener also has a half-century in the Vitality Blast this season scoring 55 against Nottinghamshire.

Women’s PCA Player of the Month

With the women’s game starting their season in May, voting is now open for the first Player of the Month award in 2022.

The Charlotte Edwards Cup took centre stage at the beginning of the domestic season, with Southern Vipers making a strong start in Group B and South East Stars looking good in Group A.

The Eliminator and final are on 11 June and will see the first silverware of the season given out, along with the Player of Tournament award.

To give you an idea of which of the Women’s PCA members to vote for, below is a quick glance at the four nominee’s achievements in May:

Amy Jones (Central Sparks)

Central Sparks’ Amy Jones has had a brilliant start to the season, at the end of May she sat top of the MVP table with 83 points.

Jones scored an impressive 180 runs in the Charlotte Edwards Cup in May, including a brilliant knock of 80 off 49 balls to help Sparks beat Sunrisers by 24 runs.

Aylish Cranstone (South East Stars)

With the most runs in the Charlotte Edwards Cup in May, South East Stars batter Aylish Cranstone scored 199 runs picking up 71 points on the MVP table.

Cranstone has picked up an incredible three Match MVPs in just four games and ended the month as the second ranked player.

Emma Lamb (Thunder)

At the end of May Thunder all-rounder Emma Lamb sat third in the overall MVP rankings table with 60 points.

Lamb scored a couple of half-centuries on her way to 144 Charlotte Edwards Cup runs in May and has been consistent with the ball taking figures of 2-18 against Northern Diamonds.

Danni Wyatt (Southern Vipers)

Southern Vipers’ batter Danni Wyatt completes May’s top four with 53 MVP points from just three games compared to the other’s four.

Wyatt smashed 76 off just 44 balls including 11 fours and a six as Vipers beat Lightning by five wickets.
