It’s an exciting time for the young ladies that form part of the Cricket South Africa development pipeline as a wider group of South Africa Under-19 hopefuls convene for a selection camp in Johannesburg between 06 – 10 July.

The camp will be followed by a four-match T20 series against the senior Namibia side, with two double-header encounters held at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on the 13th and 14th of July next week

A 24-player squad has been selected to take part in an extensive fitness and skills-based training camp at Steyn City, with head coach Dinesha Devnarain, along with her coaching staff and the U19 national selection panel set to take the players through their paces before settling on a crop of 18 players to take on Namibia.

The camp marks the commencement of the team’s journey towards the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup to be hosted in South Africa in January 2023.

Head coach, Dinesha Devnarain commented:

“The purpose of the camp is that we have 24 girls now, we originally started with 60. We trimmed that down to 24 and now we are looking to get from 24 to 18 after this camp.

“The main purpose is to get the girls in together, we haven’t seen each other in two months. They have been training with their provincial coaches, so we are looking to get that group of 18, which wouldn’t be our final squad or selection yet. Once we get that 18, we can start looking at skillsets to find balance in the team, especially when it comes to T20 cricket,” she added.

“We are looking for girls to take the game forward. We are looking at different skillsets, we have an idea of how we want to play the game, so we are looking to see which girls fit best in those positions; from a top-order perspective, to bowling in the middle, bowling in the death and batters finishing off games.

“It is exciting because this has never been done before. We can really put tools in place here to produce future Proteas, so the importance of this camp is crucial. The girls are going to get as much information and clarity as they can before they go back to their provincial teams again,” the coach said.
