PCA: Ali wins Vitality Player of the Summer award

Moeen Ali tops the MVP Rankings to give him the trophy.

Moeen Ali has won the 2022 Vitality Men’s IT20 Player of the Summer courtesy of finishing the campaign as the number one player, statistically.

The all-rounder had an impressive summer in IT20 cricket which included breaking the record for the fastest half-century by an English player in the shortest format. Ali was presented with the trophy following the final game of the summer at the Ageas Bowl.

The Vitality IT20 Player of the Summer is selected by the PCA Most Valuable Player Rankings. The formula enables players to score or lose MVP points on every ball based on their expected performance for that ball in comparison to CricViz’s extensive historical database of 20-over fixtures, with the venue being played at also taken into account.

Scoring 154 runs with a brilliant strike-rate of 187 and taking six wickets at an average of 17.5, Ali is a worthy winner securing 86 points on the Vitality IT20 MVP table.

Ali scored the fastest half century by an Englishmen in the second IT20 against South Africa, smashing 52 with a phenomenal strike rate of 288.8 including six sixes in a fabulous innings which won him the Match MVP award and secured 18 points on the rankings. Ali had an impressive start to the summer in the first game against India scoring 36 with a strike rate of 180 and taking 2-26.

On receiving the award, a modest Ali said: “My form has been decent, I feel like I’ve been playing well but it has been a disappointing summer from a team perspective.

“It was nice to score the fastest IT20 50 at Bristol, I do enjoy batting there and that was definitely the highlight of my summer.

“Jos wants us to take responsibility and my role is to float around in the order and be aggressive and play my shots when I get the chance.”

Dawid Malan came second on the rankings with 65 MVP points, thanks to scoring 172 runs at an average of 28.6.

Malan picked up the Match MVP award in the third IT20 against India with a blistering 77 off 39 balls including six fours and five sixes earning him 33 points on the table. He also scored 43 off 23 balls in the first IT20 against South Africa.

Just one point behind in third place on 64 MVP points is Chris Jordan who picked up an impressive 10 wickets at an average of 21.2.

Jordan picked up the Match MVP award in the first IT20 against India scoring 26 off 17 balls with the bat and taking 2-23 which earned him 26 points on the MVP table. He also picked up fantastic figures of 4-27 in the next match.
