North West Cricket honoured its top players, coaches, umpires and scorers during a glittering 2021/22 awards ceremony held at the Madiba Banquet Hall in Potchefstroom on Friday, 9 September.

The big winners on the night were the men’s and women’s Dragons players of the year. All-rounder, Senuran Muthusamy won the NW Dragons men’s Player of the Year award, whilst Tazmin Brits won the NW Dragons Women Player of the Year award.

Muthusamy also picked up the NW Dragons men’s Bowler of the Year award in his first season as a Dragons player. In his first year as a North West Dragons player, all-rounder, Senuran Muthusamy (28) took home the NW Dragons Player of the Year and Bowler of the Year awards for the 2021/22 season. Muthusamy was one of the stars drafted into the team for their inaugural season in division 1 and he repaid the faith that management had in him with some fine all-round displays.

“Sen” as he is known by his team-mates, was the proverbial trump card on numerous occasions. His standout performance with the willow was a superbly crafted first A-list century (100) against Western Province in Potch at the J.B. Marks Oval. His team were in a spot of bother, but Sen dug it out and his knock sent his team to victory.

“That was a special innings to me, and it made it even better that it helped the team to win,” adds Muthusamy. He averaged 40 in the One Day Cup and 33 in the 4-Day Cup and 36 in the CSA Provincial T20.

In a topsy-turvy season, Muthusamy kept things together when needed most with bat or ball – depending on the situation. The man who puts his team first and delivers when you need him most.

“It is a real honour to be awarded at an individual level. We played good cricket especially in the white ball format last season and I am happy to have been able to contribute overall,” stated Muthusamy.

In only his first season at the Dragons, Wesley Marshall (28) has quickly established himself at the top of the order as a hard-hitting batsman with a see ball, hit ball approach. “I am really happy to win the award. It’s always a nice feeling when all the work that went into last season is appreciated. However, I feel like there’s still a lot of room for improvement which I’ll be looking to be better this season,” he said.

One of his highlights this past year was the white ball tournaments where the Dragons featured prominently. In the CSA T20 Provincial Cup, the team had a no-result against the eventual champions the Knights, due to rain. Marshall averaged 32.50 with the bat and hit a top score of 73.

Wesley Marshall was named at the NW Dragons Batsman of the Year, whilst the Players Player of the Year award goes to the experienced Heino Kuhn, who will also captain the side this season. Kuhn deputises for Nicky van den Bergh, who is still recovering from an injury.

“On behalf of the Board of North West Cricket, congratulations to all the winners today. We are proud of the achievements that our players, umpires, scorers, and administrators have obtained in the 2021/22 season. We are looking forwards to an action packed 2022/23 season. Welcoming all cricket fanatics back to J.B. Marks Oval for the CSA T20 Challenge in October 2022, and the rest of the cricket world in January 2023 for the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. Said Mr. Ismail Minty (Acting CEO – NWC).
