On Friday, September 16, the first edition of the Embassy Trophy was played at Groen-Geel in Wassenaar. In a sporting and diplomatic atmosphere, the Bangladesh embassy won the first trophy.

The event had four participants: Bangladesh, India, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In connection with the death of Queen Elizabeth, the British team was replaced by a Dutch delegation.

Because Bangladesh won its matches against New Zealand and India, KNCB chairman Guido Landheer – under the watchful eye of the ambassadors of India and New Zealand – presented the undisputed winner of the tournament with the trophy.

Guido Landheer explains: “Playing for the Embassy Trophy is intended to bring different nationalities and cultures into contact with each other. That has worked out well and I am convinced that future editions will grow in size and relevance. The aim is that the next edition of the Embassy Trophy will be played with at least eight countries. The aim is also to organize the event in 2027 on the Malieveld.”
