Kerr Sisters Set For Sixers

New Zealand sisters Amelia and Jess Kerr have linked with the WBBL Brisbane Heat team ahead of tomorrow night’s Weber Women’s Big Bash League season opener against the Sydney Sixers at Great Barrier Reef Arena.

The duo arrived in Mackay last night to complete a dizzying journey that saw them playing for the White Ferns in the West Indies last weekend, with a stop over in New York on the way home to Wellington for a 24-hour check-in with family and friends before winging their way to Queensland.

Allrounder Amelia makes her return to the Heat after taking a break from the game last year, while pace bowler Jess is set to make her WBBL debut after signing on as a Replacement Overseas player while Danni Wyatt (England) and Pooja Vastrakar (India) complete pre-tournament commitments.

The Heat has named a squad of 14 players for tomorrow night’s game, with a final decision on the starting side to be made before the bat flip.

Brisbane coach Ashley Noffke said they would inspect the pitch and playing surface before finalising their team.

“Everyone is preparing as if they are playing, and that is the sort of flexibility you need early in the tournament,’’ he said.

“We’ve got some options, depending on match-ups, and how we think the conditions will play out. It’s an outstanding playing arena and we will give ourselves the chance to assess things and then finalise the starting team.”

The Brisbane Heat have won seven of their last eight WBBL matches against the Sydney Sixers, including each of their past three meetings.

Five teams will be based in Mackay this week for four days of WBBL action, with the Heat also featuring on Saturday night and Tuesday afternoon October 18.

Tomorrow night’s opener will be live on Channel Seven, Fox Cricket and Kayo, with tickets available from $5 for kids and $10 for adults through Ticketek
