Cricket Wellington’s new “Coach Developer Network” initiative is expected to play a vital role in training and mentoring cricket coaches in the region, as well as supporting the coach on the job.

Designed to create a sustainable system of Coach Development in the wider Wellington area, the new programme will ensure coaches have relevant knowledge, up-to-date coaching methods, and access to ongoing support.

Cricket Wellington Community Manager, Christian Thurston, said in terms of coach development, there was a need to address not only the present but also the future.

“The truth is, even the most experienced and successful coaches need feedback and mentoring,” said Thurston.

“Every coach you deal with is different and uses different methods, and this is why ongoing support and check-ins for Coach Developers are important for on-going learning.”

Through the initiative, nominated Coach Developers from local cricket clubs will be supported through training evenings, regular check-ins, and support from NZC’s Regional Coach Development Manager.

Cricket Wellington will also offer a coaching course, designed to fit the needs of the chosen Coach Developers’ cricket club.

In time, Cricket Wellington hope to have an NZC qualified Coach Developer assigned to every club in Wellington – able to support the development of coaches at the critical grassroots level.

Feedback from trainee Coach Developers has been positive.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working alongside and receiving support from Cricket Wellington staff, who I’ve really learnt a lot from,” said one Johnsonville Coach.

“I have learnt a lot, especially around how to approach different scenarios and work with different coaching styles.”
