The ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup legacy has opened up more opportunities for female cricketers to participate in the sport, with Cricket South Africa (CSA) announcing the inaugural CSA Girls’ U19 T20 National Championships to be held from 24 – 25 February 2023 in Stellenbosch.

Six teams from around the country will compete in the Championships after a six-week long national competition made up of regional school tournaments across all 16 CSA affiliates.

Provincial champions battled it out against the regional counterparts to secure a spot in the CSA Girl’s U19 T20 National Championships.

Kuruman Hub was victorious in the Northern Cape and Free State region and Victoria Hub of Western Province went through against Garden Route Badgers and Boland Cricket winners.

Jeppe School for Girls from Lions Cricket claimed victory against their North West counterparts, Umtapo High School from Kwa-Zulu Natal Coastal triumphant against KZN Inland whilst Benoni High from Easterns Cricket triumphed against Titans, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo Cricket winners.

Nomandi JSS of Kei Cricket made it to the championships against Border and Eastern Province Cricket.

All matches will take place at the University of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape.

The teams will also have an opportunity to take inspiration from their role models when they attend the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Newlands Cricket Ground on Sunday, 26 February 2023.

Local Organising Committee (LOC) Legacy Projects lead, Johan Weyers, said; “2023 has marked an important milestone in the country when it comes to raising the profile of women’s cricket.

“In the first two months of the year, we have successfully hosted the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, respectively.

“It was important for the organisation to bring in young female cricketers across the country to be part of the legacy of the two events,” Weyers continued.

“The events have allowed us to dig deep into our women’s development pipeline in a bid to increase the pool of female cricketers to sustain a healthy pipeline for our women’s team.

“We hope the competition can thrive and help us in our journey to build future stars of the women’s game,” concluded Weyers.
