After a breakout domestic season, fast bowler Spencer Johnson has recommitted to the West End Redbacks for a further three seasons.

A South Australian local, Johnson has been in the SACA system for eight years and has overcome his fair share of injury woes before getting his opportunity this season.

Since making his Sheffield Shield debut in February, Johnson took 16 wickets in three matches, including a haul of 7-47 against Queensland at the Gabba in only his second match and 6-87 on Shield debut against Victoria at St Kilda.

Although he previously debuted in the One Day format of the game, he added another three One Day Cup games to his tally this season and was South Australia’s most economical bowler in the Marsh Cup final against Western Australia.

The left-armer was then rewarded for his outstanding summer, earning selection in the Australia A side and playing a match against New Zealand A across the ditch, taking four wickets in the first innings alongside his Redbacks teammate and regular new ball partner, Wes Agar.

Johnson said he is happy and excited to have re-signed with the Redbacks for another three seasons.

“I have real belief in my teammates about the positive direction we are moving in together after an improved Redbacks season and I want to help the group keep moving forward,” Johnson said.

“SACA and its staff have been a great support to me throughout my career and have helped me get to this stage where I am able to consistently contribute in games.

“I’m hoping to maintain that in the years to come and help my state continue to move up in the standings.”

West End Redbacks Head Coach Jason Gillespie said Johnson’s new contract was great reward for effort.

“We are really pleased that Spencer has agreed to stay here in South Australia, he is an integral part of our Redbacks side and plans moving forward,” Gillespie said.

We saw with Spencer this summer that confidence and belief have met opportunity and to see him take his opportunities after everything he’s been through has been brilliant.

“’Spon’ is a great bloke to have around the group and we are excited to see him continue to improve and contribute for the Redbacks over the next three seasons.”

The Redbacks will begin pre-season training in June.
