Axar Patel fined for breaching IPL code of conduct in Delhi Capitals’ loss to Mumbai Indians

Must Read

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has been handed a ₹12 lakh fine by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) following his side’s narrow defeat against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. The fine was imposed for a slow over rate during the high-scoring clash at the Wankhede Stadium.

The BCCI confirmed the penalty in an official release, stating:
“As this was his (Patel’s) team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patel was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the statement read.

Despite the financial setback, the game itself proved to be a thriller. Delhi Capitals came within touching distance of chasing down a formidable 205-run target, eventually falling short by just 12 runs.

Reflecting on the game’s turning points, Axar Patel pointed to missed opportunities in the middle overs. “We had the game. I think we had soft dismissals from the middle order, some bad shots. We lost by 12 runs with an over to go, so we could have still won it. It can’t happen that your lower-order batters will always come and save you in chases,” Axar told the broadcasters after the match.

While acknowledging the loss, he remained optimistic and emphasized that poor shot selection happens occasionally. “There are some odd days where you play wrong shots, so I don’t think there’s any point thinking too much about it. I thought 205 was a great target because it was a good pitch and dew was also coming,” he added.

The defeat marks another tough outing for the Capitals, but the narrow margin suggests there are positives to build on. Meanwhile, the over rate fine places added pressure on Axar as he looks to guide his team back on track in the upcoming fixtures.
