BCCI issues IPL-wide alert over match fixing threat

Must Read

As the excitement for IPL 2025 builds, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a major warning to all participating teams, players, and support staff over an emerging match-fixing threat linked to a suspicious individual posing as a fan.

According to internal communications shared with IPL franchises, the BCCI has raised red flags about a dubious businessman from Hyderabad who is allegedly trying to infiltrate the tournament by using deceptive tactics to get close to players and other key personnel. The warning comes amid increased vigilance from the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) ahead of the high-stakes season.

“The individual in question is reportedly attempting to get himself close to the IPL participants by masquerading as a fan. He has allegedly been spotted at the team hotels and in the matches, making efforts to befriend players and staff, and inviting potential targets to private parties. There is also information of him offering gifts not only to team members but also to their families,” the report read.

This suspected fixer has reportedly expanded his approach beyond the players themselves, aiming to exploit relationships around them. “One of the methods reportedly employed by him involves approaching family members of franchise owners, players, coaches, support staff, and even commentators,” the report stated.

Furthermore, there are signs that his outreach may not be limited to domestic circles. “There are also indications that he may have attempted to contact relatives living abroad, often through social media platforms,” the report added.

The BCCI has urged franchises to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior or approaches to the ACU immediately. This heightened caution underscores the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game at a time when global attention is focused on the IPL.

As the league continues to attract massive viewership and significant betting interest, BCCI’s proactive stance highlights the ongoing battle against corruption in cricket. IPL stakeholders have been reminded to exercise extreme caution, especially as the tournament enters its most commercially lucrative phase.
