Ireland‘s men have canceled their plans to host Afghanistan for a multi-format series this year, citing “financial reasons.” The series was originally set to feature one Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is, as part of the Men’s Future Tours Programme.
Despite this cancellation, Ireland’s men’s team will still host several exciting series later in the year. They will play their first-ever home T20I series against England in September, as well as hosting both ODI and T20 series against the West Indies in May and June.
Cricket Ireland’s chief executive, Warren Deutrom, explained the decision, stating, “One planned series that won’t go ahead for financial reasons is against Afghanistan. This decision is part of our management of short-term budgetary constraints, as well as our requirement to comply with the Board’s mandate to deliver balanced investment across the organisation’s strategic objectives.”
While the Afghanistan series is off, Deutrom reassured fans, adding, “Ireland fans will, however, be able to enjoy some of the world’s best cricketers playing on these shores.”
In addition to the men’s fixtures, Ireland’s women’s team has a busy schedule. They will host Zimbabwe for three T20Is and two ODIs in July, followed by three ODIs against Pakistan the next month. The women’s team will also compete in two ICC World Cup qualifier tournaments, playing matches against Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Scotland between April 9 and 18.
