Hobart Hurricanes invited to inaugural Global Super League T20 in Guyana after BBL title win

Must Read

The Hobart Hurricanes have received an invitation to compete in the prestigious Global Super League (GSL) in Guyana, a major development that follows their maiden Big Bash League (BBL) title win. This milestone marks a turning point for the Hurricanes, who had long been title-less in Australia’s flagship T20 competition.

The Hurricanes’ breakthrough came in emphatic fashion as they defeated the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets in the BBL final. Mitchell Owen played a starring role, smashing a blistering 108 off just 42 balls to guide Hobart to a commanding victory. The chase was wrapped up in only 14.1 overs, sealing the franchise’s first-ever BBL trophy.

Their invitation to the GSL, a relatively new but fast-rising global T20 tournament, signals growing international recognition for the Hurricanes. The GSL, hosted in Guyana and organized by Cricket West Indies, brings together elite T20 franchises from around the world. Since its inception in 2024, the tournament has been lauded for its competitive cricket, professional management, and top-quality playing conditions.

Among those impressed by the GSL is Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins, who praised the tournament’s execution and quality. “It was amazing,” Cummins told ESPNcricinfo. “We were really impressed with how they ran the tournament, the quality of the cricket and the quality of the wickets. I’ve long been an advocate for bringing back the Champions League, and I’d really love to see that take place and, at the moment, the GSL is the closest thing that cricket’s got to that.”

He also acknowledged the visual impact of teams maintaining their franchise branding on the international stage: “I think they prefer that we’re playing in Big Bash colours rather than state colours and hopefully that’s something that evolves too.”

The Hurricanes’ participation not only rewards their domestic success but also aligns with a growing trend of global T20 league integration. As the GSL positions itself as a potential successor to the now-defunct Champions League T20, franchises like Hobart are seizing the chance to compete and grow on an international platform.
