Despite retiring from cricket six years ago, Yuvraj Singh continues to make a significant impact on Indian cricket. While he now spends much of his time on the golf course, his mentorship has been instrumental in shaping the careers of rising stars like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma.
Yuvraj is more than just a mentor to these young cricketers—he treats them like brothers. His approachable and generous nature has earned him deep respect among the next generation. When Abhishek scored his maiden international century against Zimbabwe, Yuvraj made sure to video-call him to celebrate the moment. However, Gill and Abhishek aren’t the only ones benefiting from Yuvraj’s guidance; several young talents are climbing the ranks under his watchful eye, including Kolkata Knight Riders’ all-rounder Ramandeep Singh.
Regarded as one of the most promising players in Punjab’s cricketing circuit, Ramandeep shared how Yuvraj went out of his way to support him. Speaking on a podcast with Ram Shamani, he recalled a remarkable gesture from the two-time World Cup winner. “I keep on having conversations with Yuvi paaji. He’s from Punjab, and I am lucky that he has seen me batting. When the Covid restrictions were initially lifted, we used to practice at the PCA Stadium. Yuvi paaji used to come there too. One of the days, he missed his practice session for me and arranged the center wicket. He stood in the sun the entire afternoon at the umpire’s position and recorded my batting videos. He took my number and shared those videos with me and was giving me advice – what needs to improve, what I was doing well and what I wasn’t.”
Yuvraj’s generosity extends to many other young batters, including Anmolpreet Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, who frequently seek his advice. “That guy has a huge heart. He is a bigger character than he was as a cricketer. He goes out of the way; that’s his nature. He has helped Shubman, Abhishek, Anmolpreet Singh, Prabhsimran… When it comes to batting, they all take their problems to Yuvraj Singh. It’s never happened that he hasn’t answered their phone. Everyone. And a person like him who is busy the whole year, he still managed to take time out,” Ramandeep added.
Currently with KKR in IPL 2025, Ramandeep remained unbeaten on six in the tournament opener, where his team fell to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. But his admiration for Yuvraj extends beyond mentorship—he has twice come close to replicating his idol’s historic feat of hitting six sixes in an over. Competing in the Sher-e-Punjab tournament, Ramandeep smashed five sixes in a single over on two occasions but fell short of the final blow.
Has he discussed this with Yuvraj? “I really want to smash six sixes in an over. Not because I have to break Yuvraj’s record or anything like that. What he’s done is remarkable. I don’t know what happens on the sixth ball. I am missing something. He [Yuvraj] knows that it’s written. It will happen if and when it has to,” he said.
Beyond records, Ramandeep values the feeling of striking the ball cleanly. “More importantly, it’s about how I feel. You may score runs, but you don’t get that feeling. On the other hand, you may score 35 runs, but if everything is timed well and hits the middle of the bat, there’s no better feeling,” he added.
With Yuvraj Singh’s guidance shaping the next generation, his legacy continues to thrive beyond his playing days.
