PCB: Process for the appointment of independent members to the BoG

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), formerly the Board of Control for Cricket in Pakistan, is the governing body for cricket in Pakistan. It oversees and organizes all tours and matches for the Pakistan national cricket team. A member of the International Cricket Council since 1952, the PCB represents Pakistan's men's and women's teams in international cricket tournaments.

The following process was adopted for the appointment of four independent members to the Board of Governors:

i) As per Clause 39 of the PCB Constitution 2019, the BoG constituted a three-member Nomination Committee in August 2019, comprising Mr Asad Ali Khan (Patron’s nominee), Mr Shahrez Abdullah Khan (BoG member) and Mr Bakhtiar Khawaja (HR specialist and independent member) and approved their Terms of Reference.

ii) After assessing the corporate structure and composition, the Committee put together eligibility criteria. Some of the salient features included:

a) Minimum graduation from a recognised university. Higher educational or professional qualification from accredited universities/professional bodies were to be given due weightage.

b) Experience of corporate governance, best practices and strategic planning at the senior leadership level of management and/or professional excellence and experience with proven track record in the candidate’s line of work

c) International exposure, sound communication skills, positive attitude and result orientation will be given due weightage

d) Ability to provide constructive challenge at the Board level

e) No conflict of interest, nor a pecuniary relationship with the PCB and its business etc.

iii) After rigorous hunt as per corporate requirements and following a series of interviews, the Nomination Committee shortlisted eight potential candidates in their recommendations

iv) Nomination Committee presented the shortlisted candidates to the BoG during the 59th BoG meeting in Lahore on 9 November, who, after reviewing Resumes of all eight candidates appointed Mr Javed Kurieshi and Mr Arif Saeed for a three-year period, and Mr Aasim Wajid Jawad and Ms Alia for a two-year period.
