The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly taken a significant step toward reshaping the Pakistan Super League (PSL) by deciding to establish it as an independent entity. This major development was discussed during a Governing Council meeting in Lahore, signaling a move towards greater autonomy for the league.
Pro Pakistani reports, citing a well-known sports journalist, that the PSL will soon function as a standalone company, separate from PCB control. This decision aims to streamline league operations and address long-standing demands from stakeholders. The shift follows a series of high-profile changes within the PCB, with several staff members transitioning from board roles to PSL management. Establishing an independent structure is expected to foster innovation and improve efficiency in key operational areas.
Among other significant updates, discussions during the meeting also focused on an exhibition match between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, set to take place on April 8 in Peshawar. Organizers hope this fixture will pave the way for more PSL matches in the city, subject to security clearance and logistical arrangements, which are expected to be finalized by the weekend.
Additionally, the upcoming 10th edition of the league coincides with the expiration of current franchise agreements. Before renewing these deals, the PCB plans to hire an evaluation company to reassess franchise fees and explore the potential expansion of the league by adding two new teams for Season 11.
Many view these recent PCB initiatives as part of a broader strategy to enhance the PSL’s appeal and strengthen its position in the global franchise cricket market. By creating an independent organization solely dedicated to the league, the PSL could carve out a more prominent place in an increasingly competitive landscape.
