Viewers from around the world will be able to watch the Over-50s World Cup with all 42 matches set to be live-streamed when the tournament gets underway in and around Cape Town on Wednesday.

Two groups of six countries will play five league matches before the semi-finals and the final which will be played at Newlands on March 24. The teams which do not qualify for the semi-finals will compete in the Bowl and Plate competitions.

“Every group match will have one static camera on the pitch and one panning camera which will follow the ball,” said Pitchvision chief executive, Johan van der Merwe, “and we plan to have a third, manned camera for the semi-finals with at least one more for the final.”

Analysis will also be available for the teams of Veterans who know very little about each other’s techniques and styles of play with SA Over-50s coach, Allan Donald, admitting it was a “journey into the unknown” – at least for the first few games.

“We’re going to be spending a few evenings between games watching the highlights from other games to get some information,” Donald admitted. “But more important is the idea that anyone with an internet link, anywhere in the world will be able to watch the tournament, that’s really exciting.”

SA Veterans captain, Dave Callaghan, said it added a completely new dimension to the tournament which is sponsored by Evergreen Lifestyle: “We’re playing at club and school grounds so there won’t be huge crowds at the venues but the idea that there might be thousands of people watching, especially with India playing for the first time. It’s both exciting and a bit daunting – we’ll have to be on our best behaviour.”

South Africa’s opening game, against Wales, is at Cape Town Cricket Club on Wednesday. Entrance is free to all games. All the fixtures and tournament details can be found on the Veterans Cricket Association of SA website: www.vcasa.co.za
