Cricket NSW has launched a player and staff initiative to get behind the nation’s COVID-19 vaccination drive by providing a $100 donation to fight skin cancer for each person that receives a vaccination.

The overall donation, with a goal of almost $20,000, will come via the Cricket NSW Foundation.

The Cricket NSW Foundation is the charitable arm of Cricket NSW and exists to enhance people’s lives through cricket. Funds raised through this vaccination initiative will be directed to providing free skin checks for members of the cricket community and their families across key areas of NSW.

The skin checks will be provided by Skin Patrol, who have previously worked with Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association.

As a sport that is played during the intense summer sun, Cricket NSW will be encouraging players, umpires and volunteers at all levels to look after their health and wellbeing. Overexposure to UV radiation is the major cause of skin cancer and while protecting yourself from the sun is important, early detection and treatment are just as vital.

CNSW CEO Lee Germon encouraged the cricket community to get behind the vaccination drive to assist in the fight against COVID-19 and battle skin cancer.

“This latest outbreak has reiterated the importance of vaccination in the fight against COVID-19 and as an organisation we would like to encourage all staff, players and stakeholders to take part and do their bit,” Germon said.

“Getting vaccinated not only keeps ourselves safe, but the rest of the community too, including the most vulnerable.

“As we look ahead to our planned summer of cricket, vaccination is going to play an increasingly important role in being able to get our game on the grounds of NSW from community to our professional teams and international cricket.

“With this initiative the Cricket NSW Foundation will donate a significant amount to fund a number of free skin checks and education sessions across the state, alongside a registered service provider.

“Information about how to register for the free skin checks will be communicated to all NSW cricket clubs in coming weeks.”
