Cricket stars gathered at Newlands Cricket Ground for the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Awards ceremony on Saturday night to celebrate the 2022/23 season and to look forward to the new season.

Western Province men batter Tony de Zorzi was the star of the show as he walked away with four awards on the night. While WP women’s Nadine de Klerk scooped two.

De Zorzi was named CSA 4-Day Player of the Year, CSA One-Day Cup Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and Player of the Year.

Another WP men’s players who won the awards on the night was bowlers Mihlali Mpongwa who scored Young Player of the Year while Nandre Burger won CSA T20 Player of the Year.

De Klerk was named CSA T20 Player of the Year and Players Player of the Year.

De Klerk was not alone, as her teammates Kayla Reyneke and Jemma Botha shared the Player of the Year award.

Faye Tunnicliffe was named 50 over Player of the Year and captain Leah Jones scored a Player of the Year award.

De Zorzi commented on the wonderful night he had: “It was a wonderful night, well organised event and thanks to the guys at WPCA. It’s wonderful to achieve and win all these four awards, I have never won so many awards in this kind of thing before. So, for me, hopefully going to the season I will be able to take this confidence into my own game,” he said.

Congratulations to our exceptional coach, Claire Terblanche, for scooping not one, but two well-deserved awards – CSA Coach of the Year and Cape Town Sports Council Coach of the Year.! Your unwavering commitment, guidance, and expertise have been instrumental in our team’s success. Your dedication to nurturing talent and fostering a winning spirit have not only elevated our players but also set a shining example for the entire coaching community. We are incredibly proud of your achievements, and we look forward to more outstanding seasons ahead under your leadership. Well done, Coach!

WPCA CEO Michael Canterbury added: “Congratulations to all the award winners! Your dedication, skill, and passion for the game of cricket have truly shone through. Your achievements not only bring pride to our organization but also inspire countless others. Keep reaching for new heights and may your success on the cricket field continue to soar. Well done!”
