Sourav Ganguly has approached the police over what he alleges is a sustained effort to damage his public image through misleading and defamatory content shared on social media. According to a PTI report, the former India Captain and current Cricket Association of Bengal President lodged a complaint at Thakurpukur Police Station against the operators of a Facebook page titled “Sourav Ganguly Fans”, which he claims has been publishing content that has adversely affected his personal and professional reputation.

The page, which describes itself as an unofficial fan page, has amassed more than 3.6 million followers. In his complaint, Ganguly alleged that material being circulated through the account was creating a negative perception among the public and called for authorities to identify those responsible for operating it.

In his complaint to Thakurpukur Police Station, Ganguly wrote: “Being a public figure, I understand that opinions and criticism are a part of public life; however, spreading misleading, defamatory, and damaging content with the intention of harming my reputation is unacceptable and requires appropriate legal action.”

The former India Captain also requested that law enforcement pursue the matter under the relevant legal provisions. In the same complaint, he wrote: “I therefore request you to kindly register my complaint against the individuals/group operating this page and take necessary action as per the applicable laws.”

Ganguly further sought intervention to prevent the continued circulation of the content and asked authorities to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter.

One of Indian cricket’s most influential figures

The complaint comes from one of the most prominent figures in Indian cricket. Ganguly captained India between 2000 and 2005, leading the team to the final of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup and overseeing several landmark achievements during a transformative period for Indian cricket.

His leadership record included 21 victories in 49 Test matches as captain, giving him a win percentage of 42.85. In One-Day Internationals, he captained India in 147 matches, winning 76 of them for a win percentage of 51.70.

Career achievements and legacy

Ganguly represented India in 113 Tests and 311 One-Day Internationals, scoring 18,575 international runs across formats. He accumulated 7,212 Test runs, including 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries, while his highest score in the format was 239.

In One-Day Internationals, he scored 11,363 runs at an average of 41.02, including 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries, with a highest score of 183. He remains among India’s most accomplished batters across both formats and later went on to serve as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India after his playing career.

A senior police officer confirmed that Ganguly’s complaint has been received and said the matter is currently under examination.
