The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is moving towards introducing revenue sharing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) after years of demands from franchise owners. Unlike major franchise leagues, BPL franchises currently do not receive a share of the tournament’s profits, making financial sustainability challenging.
Following record-breaking fan engagement in BPL 2025, the BCB has decided to share a portion of ticket sales revenue with franchises if the tournament generates a profit.
BCB’s Cricket Operations Chairman, Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, confirmed the plan, stating, “If we generate a good amount of revenue from ticket sales and see that we are making a profit, we plan to share a portion with the franchises. No matter how small the amount is, we want to start this initiative and send a message that we are standing by them.”
This marks a shift in BCB’s approach, as BPL franchises have long struggled financially compared to teams in leagues like the IPL, PSL, and CPL, which follow revenue-sharing models.
BPL franchises rarely gain direct financial benefits from participation, with prize money often insufficient to cover top player salaries and limited sponsorship opportunities. This has led some franchises to struggle or resort to questionable financial practices.
While the current initiative is limited to ticket revenue, BCB plans to expand profit-sharing in future seasons to attract more franchise investment.
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is facing controversy over non-payment of players, with Durbar Rajshahi’s foreign cricketers refusing to play against Rangpur Riders due to unpaid wages. Despite last-minute payment attempts, the players remained firm in their decision, forcing Rajshahi to field an all-local XI with special BCB approval.
The issue has plagued the tournament, with earlier player boycotts during the Chattogram leg and reports of non-payment at other franchises, including Chattogram Kings. Franchise owner Samir Qader Chowdhury even admitted to withholding wages.
The crisis has drawn BCB’s attention, prompting an emergency meeting where officials assured swift action. However, concerns over financial accountability and player treatment continue to overshadow the BPL.
