Kolkata Knight Riders have reportedly appointed Abhishek Nayar as their new head coach ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, marking a significant internal promotion for one of the franchise’s most trusted figures. According to a report by The Indian Express, the franchise has officially confirmed Nayar’s elevation, which follows his long association with KKR’s support staff.
Nayar replaces Chandrakant Pandit, who guided the team through the past two campaigns. His appointment signals the franchise’s renewed faith in continuity and homegrown leadership — a move expected to bring both stability and innovation as KKR prepares for the upcoming season.
Deep roots within the KKR setup
A former Mumbai all-rounder, Nayar has been part of the KKR backroom staff from 2018 to 2024, contributing to player development, talent scouting, and team strategy. He worked extensively with high-profile cricketers such as Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, and KL Rahul — the latter publicly credited Nayar for his growth as a white-ball player. Balancing roles in men’s and women’s cricket
Alongside his IPL commitments, Nayar currently serves as head coach of the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where he has emphasized building a winning culture. “The opportunity is to create a culture where everyone understands that this franchise plays to win trophies, and try and bring that mentality into our ecosystem,” he told PTI when discussing his vision for the side.
