Interest in acquiring a majority stake in the Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals is drawing heavyweight investors, with the Aditya Birla Group emerging as a potential contender in the ongoing sale process.
Discussions are underway for a consortium involving the Aditya Birla Group and American sports investor David Blitzer’s investment group to submit a binding offer for the franchise, according to a report by Moneycontrol. The proposed deal centres on the majority stake currently held by entrepreneur Manoj Badale, with investment bank The Raine Group overseeing the sale process on behalf of the sellers.
The bidding process is understood to be approaching a key deadline, with offers from interested parties expected to be submitted by March 15.
Aryaman Birla leading discussions for potential bid
Talks on behalf of the Aditya Birla Group are being spearheaded by Aryaman Birla, a director within the conglomerate and the son of Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla.
Aryaman Birla has reportedly held discussions with members of the Blitzer family as part of the consortium’s potential proposal, as previously reported by Moneycontrol. The collaboration would represent a partnership between one of India’s largest business groups and a prominent global sports investor.
If completed, the investment would mark the Aditya Birla Group’s entry into franchise sports ownership, an area that has seen increasing interest from corporate and private equity investors in recent years.
Rajasthan Royals stake sale attracts global investor interest
The sale of the Rajasthan Royals stake has attracted several bidders, with market participants suggesting that valuations for the franchise could fall in the range of US$ 1 billion to US$ 1.2 billion, according to people familiar with the process and as previously reported by cricexec.
The rising valuations reflect the broader financial strength of the IPL ecosystem. The league’s media rights cycle for 2023–2027 alone was sold for US$ 6.2 billion, underlining the commercial appeal of the tournament.
Moneycontrol had previously reported on December 8 that a sale process for a stake in Rajasthan Royals was underway, triggering interest from global investors and business groups seeking exposure to cricket’s most lucrative franchise competition.
The development comes amid wider activity around IPL franchise ownership. Royal Challengers Bengaluru has also been linked to a potential sale process after owner Diageo explored divesting the asset, with multiple investors reportedly evaluating the opportunity.
Aryaman Birla’s cricket background adds personal connection
Aryaman Birla’s involvement in the potential deal also reflects his personal history in the sport.
The 28-year-old previously played First-Class cricket for Madhya Pradesh, where he scored 414 runs across 16 innings, including one century and a half-century. His unbeaten 103 against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy helped his team secure a draw in a challenging match at Eden Gardens.
He also had a brief stint in List A cricket, playing three innings.
During the 2018 IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals signed Aryaman Birla for INR 30 lakh (approx. US$ 33K). He remained with the franchise for two seasons before being released.
In 2019, he stepped away from professional cricket at the age of 22, taking an indefinite break from the game, according to an ESPNcricinfo report.
From cricket to business leadership within the Birla Group
Following his departure from competitive cricket, Aryaman Birla transitioned into business roles within the Aditya Birla Group.
He founded Aditya Birla New Age Hospitality, the group’s hospitality-focused venture, and also established the investment platform Aditya Birla Ventures. In 2023, he joined the conglomerate’s apex decision-making body, Aditya Birla Management Corp. Pvt Ltd.
Since then, he has taken board positions across several flagship companies within the group, including Hindalco Industries, Grasim Industries and Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail.
As the bidding process for Rajasthan Royals progresses, the proposed consortium between the Aditya Birla Group and the Blitzer family signals the growing intersection of global capital and cricket’s rapidly expanding franchise economy.
