Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign has been rocked by a major off-field health scare, with team performance analyst KC Ramasubramanian hospitalised in New Delhi after suffering a mild heart attack.
The incident comes at a critical juncture in the tournament, with the Rashid Khan-led side fighting to keep their Super 8 hopes alive following two narrow and emotionally draining defeats in Group D.
KC Ramasubramanian suffers mild heart attack in New Delhi
According to reports, Ramasubramanian experienced chest pain while in New Delhi, where Afghanistan are currently based for their next round of T20 World Cup fixtures.
“Yes, the Afghanistan team’s performance analyst experienced chest pain yesterday. He had suffered a mild heart attack and was taken to Fortis hospital. He underwent angioplasty and is out of danger and doing better now,” the source told newspaper Mumbai Mirror.
The team’s medical staff are understood to have administered immediate first aid before he was rushed to Fortis Hospital in South Delhi, a leading multi-specialty facility. He subsequently underwent an emergency angioplasty procedure and, while stable, remains under close observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has requested privacy for Ramasubramanian and his family during this period.
ICC and BCCI extend support to Afghanistan camp
The health scare has prompted swift responses from the game’s governing bodies. Both the ICC and the BCCI have reportedly reached out to the Afghanistan Cricket Board to offer full support and ensure access to the best possible medical care.
Senior members of the Afghanistan squad, including captain Rashid Khan and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi, are understood to have visited the hospital following the incident.
Ramasubramanian, a Chennai-based analyst, is regarded as a popular and respected figure within the Afghanistan dressing room. His sudden illness has understandably cast a shadow over the team’s preparations in the Indian capital.
Double Super Over thriller adds to physical and mental toll
The medical emergency occurred just days after Afghanistan were involved in one of the most dramatic matches of the T20 World Cup 2026 so far — a historic double Super Over clash against South Africa in Ahmedabad.
After both teams posted 187 in their allotted 20 overs, the contest was pushed into a Super Over — and then a second — in a rare sequence that tested the physical and emotional limits of both sides.
In the first Super Over, Azmatullah Omarzai powered Afghanistan to 17 runs. South Africa responded with 17/1, courtesy of Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs, forcing a second decider. David Miller then seized control, smashing two sixes as the Proteas surged to 23.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz struck three sixes in reply, but Afghanistan could manage only 19, falling short by four runs in a gripping finish.
The draining defeat followed an earlier five-wicket loss to New Zealand in Chennai, where Afghanistan were unable to defend a competitive total of 182.
Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup 2026 qualification scenario
Back-to-back defeats have left Afghanistan near the foot of Group D, with a net run rate of -0.555 placing them under significant pressure heading into their remaining fixtures.
They are scheduled to face the UAE in New Delhi on February 16 before travelling to Chennai to take on Canada on February 19.
To remain in contention for a Super 8 berth, Afghanistan will likely need comprehensive victories in both matches to boost their net run rate and revive their campaign.
For now, however, cricketing concerns have taken a back seat as the Afghanistan camp focuses on the recovery of a key backroom staff member. While the team continues its push in T20 World Cup 2026, the health of KC Ramasubramanian remains the immediate priority.
