Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s Chief Selector is approaching a decision point, with the former India fast bowler and BCCI officials expected to hold discussions over a potential contract extension, according to a report by Sportstar.
Agarkar’s current tenure is due to conclude in the coming weeks, although BCCI regulations allow him to continue for another year. Both sides are positive about the possibility of an extension, but outstanding issues between the board and the selection committee remain to be addressed.
BCCI and Agarkar set for contract talks
Agarkar and BCCI office-bearers are expected to meet within the next two days to work towards a path forward on his tenure. A resolution would provide clarity over the leadership of India’s men’s selection committee as the national team moves deeper into its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The discussions come after a period of friction between BCCI office-bearers and the selection committee stretching across the past two months. Questions over Agarkar’s position intensified when he did not attend the board’s performance review meeting on September 3, either in person or virtually.
His existing contract period runs until October 4, with an additional one-year term available if the BCCI chooses to extend his tenure.
Selection committee faces important upcoming decisions
The timing of the contract discussions coincides with a busy period for the national selection committee. India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies is scheduled to be selected on September 16, with Agarkar expected to be involved in the meeting.
The committee will then need to turn its attention to India’s all-format tour of New Zealand, which begins on October 22. That squad is expected to be finalised before the end of September, placing another significant selection assignment close to the end of Agarkar’s current tenure.
The West Indies series will also overlap with the Asian Games, reducing the pool of established players available for selection and creating opportunities for fringe members of India’s wider setup.
Agarkar decision comes ahead of World Cup cycle
Continuity at the head of the selection committee carries added significance with the 2027 ODI World Cup forming a major objective for India’s selectors, coaching staff and BCCI officials. If Agarkar does not continue, the board would need to appoint a new Chief Selector with roughly a year remaining before the tournament.
Agarkar’s absence from the September review meeting added uncertainty around his position, but the upcoming discussions give the BCCI and its Chief Selector an opportunity to determine whether their working relationship will continue into another term.
With his existing tenure nearing completion and major international assignments approaching, the outcome of the contract talks will determine whether Agarkar remains in charge of India’s men’s selection committee for the next phase of the World Cup cycle.
