Former Bangladesh captain Md Aminul Islam has officially been appointed as the 17th President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following an emergency meeting of the Board held earlier today. The decision was unanimously supported by all attending Directors.
Bangladesh’s first Test centurion takes the helm
Aminul Islam is one of Bangladesh cricket’s most iconic figures. He represented the national team in 13 Test matches and 39 One Day Internationals, and became a national hero by scoring 145 on debut in Bangladesh’s inaugural Test match against India in November 2000 — the country’s first-ever Test century.
He also captained Bangladesh during the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup, marking the nation’s debut appearance at the prestigious tournament.
Post-retirement contributions to global cricket
Since retiring from international cricket, Aminul Islam has focused on the global development of the sport. He has held key roles with both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) as a Development Manager, playing an instrumental role in expanding cricket into emerging nations and strengthening grassroots and infrastructure programs worldwide.
Leadership reshuffle: Abedeen and Sinha also elected
During the same BCB Board meeting, two other high-profile appointments were confirmed:
- Nazmul Abedeen Fahim was elected Senior Vice President of the BCB.
- Fahim Sinha was elected as a Vice President.
Nazmul Abedeen currently chairs both the Cricket Operations Committee and the Women’s Wing Committee at the BCB, while Fahim Sinha leads the Finance Committee and also heads the Game Development and Logistics & Protocol Committees.
New era for Bangladesh cricket leadership
The appointment of Aminul Islam marks a significant shift in BCB leadership, bringing in a figure with both on-field legacy and off-field administrative expertise. His deep understanding of international cricket operations and grassroots development positions him well to guide Bangladesh cricket through its next phase of growth.
