India’s coaching staff will have a new look for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka after Subhadeep Ghosh was confirmed as the men’s team’s New Fielding coach, bringing an extensive coaching background across domestic, pathway and international cricket to Gautam Gambhir’s support staff.
Ghosh replaces T. Dilip, whose five-year spell with the national side has come to an end following the conclusion of his contract. His first assignment in the role will be India’s two-Test series in Sri Lanka, beginning in Galle on August 15.
Experienced coach steps into senior role
A former Assam and Railways cricketer, Ghosh represented both sides during his domestic career before moving into coaching, where he accumulated experience with the BCCI Centre of Excellence, India A, India’s Under-19 programme, the India women’s team, Assam’s senior side and IPL franchises including Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals.
Highlighting his journey through Indian cricket’s coaching system, the Assam Cricket Association said in an official release: “Over the years, he has built an impressive coaching profile by working with various Indian teams across different age groups, earning recognition for his dedication and expertise.”
The association also described the appointment as a significant moment for cricket in the state.
“Assam Cricket Association takes immense pride in this significant achievement by one of Assam’s own. His appointment is a moment of great honour for the state’s cricketing fraternity and serves as an inspiration for aspiring cricketers and coaches across the region.”
The association echoed those sentiments in a post on X following the announcement.

“A former Assam and Railways cricketer, Subhadeep has also served as the Coach of the Assam Senior Men’s Team, playing a vital role in nurturing cricketing talent in the state,” it added.
“His dedication, expertise, and remarkable coaching journey have now earned him the opportunity to serve the national team,” the post continued.
“As he begins his first assignment with India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, the entire ACA family wishes him continued success in this prestigious role.”
T. Dilip reflects on five memorable years
Ghosh’s arrival also brings the curtain down on T. Dilip‘s five-year spell as India’s Fielding Coach, with the BCCI opting not to renew his contract ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.
Dilip joined the Indian men’s team in November 2021 under then Head Coach Rahul Dravid and remained part of the support staff after Gautam Gambhir took charge. During his tenure, India won two ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, the ICC Champions Trophy and two Asia Cups, while also finishing runners-up in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC World Test Championship in 2023. He also became widely recognised for introducing the post-match “Best Fielder” medal presentation, which became a dressing-room tradition.
Sharing a farewell message on Instagram, Dilip reflected on the end of his journey with the national team.
“It’s difficult to find the right words for a journey that has meant so much,” T. Dilip wrote on Instagram.
“When I first walked into this setup, I came in with one simple intention, to give everything I had every single day,” he continued.
“Fielding has always been my way of contributing to the game I love, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played a part in this team’s journey,” Dilip added.
Recalling one of the initiatives that became closely associated with his tenure, he wrote: “The fielding medal will always hold a very special place in my heart. Seeing the excitement it created in the dressing room, the smiles it brought and the value the players attached to it are memories I’ll carry with me forever.”
“I will always cherish being part of: Two ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumphs (2024 & 2026), ICC Champions Trophy triumph (2025), Two Asia Cup triumphs (2023 & 2025), Runners-up at the ICC World Test Championship & ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup (2023), Several unforgettable journeys on the world stage,” he stated.
Dilip also thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the coaches and captains he worked alongside throughout his spell with the national team.
“A heartfelt thank you to the BCCI @indiancricketteam for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to serve Indian cricket,” he wrote.
“To #RahulDravid and @gautamgambhir55, thank you for your trust. It was a pleasure to work alongside both of you,” Dilip noted.
“To @rohitsharma45, @surya_14kumar, @virat.kohli, @hardikpandya93, @shubmangill and @shreyasiyer96, it was a privilege to work with each of you and contribute during your time as captains,” he said.
“And to every player, coach and member of the support staff… thank you. The memories we’ve created together will stay with me for the rest of my life,” he continued.
“As this chapter comes to a close, I’ll always be grateful that, for five unforgettable years, I had the honour of wearing the India badge,” Dilip reflected.
“Forever grateful. The journey continues.”
Rohit Sharma pays tribute
Among those to acknowledge Dilip’s departure was former India Captain Rohit Sharma, who worked closely with the fielding coach during one of the most successful periods in the national team’s recent history.
“You are a legend Dilip garu. You created magic within the group and a behind the scenes workhorse. Best wishes ahead @dilip.tk19,” Rohit Sharma wrote on Instagram.
Ghosh now takes over the fielding department ahead of India’s tour of Sri Lanka, beginning a new chapter after spending years developing players across the domestic, age-group and international pathways.
