A Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant on Sunday against Bangladesh all-rounder and former MP Shakib Al Hasan over two bounced bank cheques. Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh, citing threats to his life following civil unrest last year, which led to deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fleeing the country.
“Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman issued the arrest warrant asking police to submit a report on the execution of the order on March 24,” a court official stated.
The warrant was issued after Shakib, also the chairman of Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm, failed to appear in court as previously ordered. A similar warrant was issued against the farm’s managing director, Gazi Shahagir Hossain, who also ignored a court summons. Two farm officials appeared in court and were granted bail after a hearing.
Shakib, regarded as Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, played his last Test match against India in Kanpur late last year. His final appearance for Bangladesh is expected at the Champions Trophy in Dubai. Currently, Shakib is banned from bowling in all formats due to a suspect action.
Shakib, who now resides in the United States, was elected as an MP for the Awami League in the January 7, 2024, elections. The case against him was filed by the International Finance Investment and Commerce (IFIC) Bank after legal notices regarding the bounced cheques were issued in October 2024. The case was officially lodged on December 24, implicating Shakib and three other company officials.
Shakib established Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm, a crab farming business in southwestern Satkhira, in 2016. The company has reportedly ceased operations since 2021.
