Bangladesh Cricket Board shifts inaugural women’s BPL to July with three-city schedule confirmed
Bangladesh’s first franchise-based T20 competition for women will debut later than initially planned. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has confirmed that the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League will now take place in July instead of the originally targeted April window, adjusting the timeline for a tournament seen as a major step in the country’s women’s cricket development.
The revised dates were outlined by the Bangladesh Cricket Board in a press release confirming the updated schedule and venues for the tournament’s maiden season.
Revised July window confirmed for inaugural women’s BPL
The Women’s Bangladesh Premier League is now scheduled to run from July 10 to July 21, with matches staged across three venues — Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogura, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, and Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
The opening ceremony and first match will take place in Bogura, while the final is scheduled to be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board said in a press release, “In view of the current global context, following consultations with potential franchise owners and key stakeholders, the BCB has decided to schedule the tournament in July to provide additional preparation time for teams, including squad formation, international player recruitment, and operational planning.”
International calendar alignment expected to boost overseas participation
The scheduling adjustment is also intended to better align the competition with the broader women’s cricket calendar and create stronger opportunities for international participation.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board added in the same press release, “The revised window also aligns well with the international cricket calendar, particularly the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled in June 2026, ensuring greater availability of overseas players.”
Placing the tournament shortly after the global event is expected to increase the chances of attracting overseas cricketers who will already be active in the T20 format.
Franchise planning continues ahead of historic women’s competition
The Women’s Bangladesh Premier League will feature three franchise teams in its inaugural season, with squads expected to combine established national players with emerging domestic talent selected through a player draft system.
Franchises will also be allowed to recruit overseas professional players in an effort to strengthen the tournament’s competitiveness and provide international exposure.
“We are planning to host the tournament in July rather than April,” a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official confirmed to Daily Sun.
The league has long been viewed as a key step in expanding the professional structure of women’s cricket in Bangladesh, providing a franchise platform that mirrors the men’s Bangladesh Premier League while offering new opportunities for domestic players.
Oversight of the competition’s launch is being led by Bangladesh Cricket Board Director and Chairperson of the BCB Women’s Wing Rubaba Dowla, who has been appointed Head of the Women’s BPL Governing Council as preparations continue for the historic first edition.
