The future of the IPL’s Impact Player rule is back in focus after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) formally sought feedback from all 10 franchises as part of its post-season review ahead of IPL 2027, according to a report by Cricbuzz journalist Vijay Tagore.
Franchises were given until August 31 to submit consolidated responses covering the Impact Player provision and several other areas of cricket operations. The consultation comes despite previous indications that the rule was expected to remain in place for at least another season, leaving its longer-term status open to further consideration.
Impact Player rule returns to the agenda
Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player rule allows teams to replace a member of their starting XI with a substitute during a match. The incoming player can contribute fully with bat or ball, giving teams an additional tactical option beyond the traditional XI.
The provision has remained one of the IPL’s most debated playing conditions. Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill are among the prominent players who have publicly opposed the rule, while there is also support for retaining it within the league.
The BCCI had indicated during the previous pre-season process that the rule was expected to continue for another year. Its decision to specifically seek franchise views after IPL 2026 has therefore reopened the question of whether the provision could be reconsidered ahead of the next season.
Franchises asked to provide consolidated feedback
Seeking post-season input from teams is part of the IPL’s regular operational process, with the latest exercise extending beyond the Impact Player rule to umpiring, practice sessions, playing conditions and matters involving the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA).
The BCCI said in its communication to IPL franchises: “As discussed in the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting, it was agreed that feedback would be collected from all franchises at the conclusion of the tournament on key cricket operations matters. Accordingly, we request you to discuss the following areas with your Cricket Operations teams and share your consolidated feedback with us.”
The consultation gives franchises an opportunity to assess the rule after another complete IPL season before the BCCI determines whether any action is required for 2027.
High-scoring season keeps debate alive
The Impact Player provision faced renewed scrutiny during IPL 2026 amid an increase in totals above 200 and wider concerns about the competitive balance between batting and bowling.
Its tactical flexibility allows franchises to strengthen their batting or bowling resources during a match, but critics have also questioned its effect on the role of genuine all-rounders. The contrasting views surrounding the provision have kept it among the league’s most closely watched playing-condition issues.
The BCCI set a firm deadline for teams to complete the consultation process. The communication stated: “Kindly ensure that your feedback reaches us by 31 August. This will help us compile inputs from all franchises and take forward the necessary review and action points ahead of the next season.”
BCCI also reviewing wider IPL operations
The post-season exercise includes operational matters beyond the Impact Player provision. Among them are PMOA concerns that emerged during IPL 2026 after unauthorised individuals were found in restricted areas, prompting the BCCI to issue additional guidelines during the season to players, support staff and team owners.
Those concerns have been included under match-day matters alongside catering and other operational issues, while franchises have also been invited to provide feedback on umpiring, practice arrangements and playing conditions.
No decision has yet been announced on changing or removing the Impact Player rule. The franchise submissions will form part of the BCCI’s review process ahead of IPL 2027, with the provision remaining in place unless the board decides otherwise.
