In response to India’s 1-3 series loss to Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made significant changes to the national team’s coaching staff. Batting coach Abhishek Nayar and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate have been relieved of their duties following the team’s underwhelming performance.
The decision comes after India managed to surpass the 200-run mark only thrice in ten innings during the series, highlighting persistent issues in the batting lineup. The BCCI is reportedly considering the addition of a new batting coach to support head coach Gautam Gambhir in addressing these challenges.
The coaching staff faced criticism for the team’s batting failures, with concerns raised about the influence of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise within the national setup, given the previous associations of Nayar and ten Doeschate with KKR. This perceived franchise influence has been a point of contention within the BCCI.
Despite the coaching changes, the BCCI has decided against immediate action regarding senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who also struggled during the series. The board emphasizes a comprehensive review and strategic adjustments over hasty decisions.
India are set to tour England for a highly anticipated five-Test series beginning June 20, likely with a streamlined support staff. Following the setback in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the BCCI appears focused on restructuring and boosting team morale ahead of another major red-ball challenge.
