BCCI confirms vacancies in men’s selection panel
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated a significant restructuring of its national selection system. In a press release issued on Thursday, the board announced that two positions on the Senior Men’s Selection Committee will be filled, with applications invited before September 10.
One vacancy comes from South Zone selector S Sharath, who has completed his four-year term. Another spot will also open up, though the board has not confirmed which of the current members—SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, or Ajay Ratra—will be replaced.
Applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria, including a minimum playing record of seven Tests, 30 first-class matches, or a combination of 10 ODIs and 20 first-class games, with at least five years since retirement.
Agarkar’s contract extended until 2026
While parts of the panel face change, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has received a strong vote of confidence. According to a report in the Indian Express, his contract as chairman of selectors has been extended until June 2026, with the agreement reportedly finalized much earlier, ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League.
“Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Since taking charge in June 2023, Agarkar has overseen a generational shift. India ended its ICC drought by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, while also reaching the ODI World Cup final in 2023. Leadership has transitioned too, with Shubman Gill made Test captain and Suryakumar Yadav leading the T20I side.
Pragyan Ojha in contention for selector role
The shake-up could also pave the way for a new face. According to a report in Cricbuzz, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is the frontrunner to join the men’s selection committee, most likely replacing Sharath as the South Zone representative.
The report said Ojha is expected to step in, though it remains unclear who will represent the Central Zone, with SS Das and Subroto Banerjee both having played in East Zone cricket during their careers.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is also reviewing contracts for selectors more broadly.
“The contracts of selectors are renewed annually. We have not yet identified which selectors will be replaced, but that process will be undertaken soon,” a BCCI official told PTI.
