The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to decide the venues for the IPL 2026 playoffs within the next two days, with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia outlining the timeline while speaking to reporters at the BCCI headquarters on Saturday. The development comes as the tournament moves closer to its closing stages, with logistical planning for the knockout phase now entering its final phase.
Saikia told reporters, “We are going to announce the venues in two days’ time. We are working on, which all can be our appropriate venues for the IPL playoffs and the finals. So, we’ll take another two days’ time,” indicating that internal deliberations are nearing completion.
Uncertainty remains over playoff host cities
Despite the approaching announcement, the governing body has not disclosed any confirmed venues, leaving multiple cities in contention as the decision process continues. Speculation around potential hosts has intensified as the playoff window draws closer, but no official indication has been provided on frontrunners.
Addressing queries around possible locations, Saikia added, “You can keep guessing, but I am not going to give you a reply. We will take a call in two days’ time.” His remarks reinforce the board’s stance of withholding details until a final call is made.
Playoff structure and timeline in focus
The IPL playoffs will follow the established four-match format comprising Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and the final, which collectively determine the champion. The group stage is scheduled to conclude on May 24, after which the knockout phase will be played across a one-week window, culminating in the final on May 31.
The sequence of fixtures is expected to follow the usual progression, with matches staged in quick succession to maintain continuity and scheduling efficiency. This structure has remained consistent in recent editions, ensuring a compact and high-stakes finish to the tournament.
Season approaches decisive phase
The announcement timeline aligns with a decisive phase in the IPL calendar, with 46 matches already completed in the league stage and most teams having played between nine and ten games. With only a limited number of fixtures remaining before the league stage concludes, the race for playoff qualification is entering a critical stretch.
On Monday, May 4, Lucknow Super Giants are set to face Mumbai Indians, marking their ninth match of the season, while Mumbai will be playing their tenth, further tightening the mid-table dynamics as teams position themselves ahead of the knockout phase.
Hosting patterns and recent precedent
Historically, playoff venues have often been aligned with teams that reached the final in the previous season, although this approach has not always been strictly followed. The final allocation typically reflects a mix of performance-based considerations and operational planning.
In the previous edition, venue allocations were adjusted late in the tournament due to logistical and weather-related factors, resulting in matches being redistributed across alternate locations. That experience highlights the flexibility retained by the board when finalising venues.
Decision expected imminently
With the final scheduled for May 31 and the league stage nearing completion, the board’s decision on playoff venues is expected to complete the operational roadmap for IPL 2026. The announcement will determine where the final four matches of the season will be staged, bringing clarity to the tournament’s concluding phase.
