BCCI weighing Kohli and Rohit’s ODI future ahead of 2027 World Cup
India’s roadmap to the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup is already taking shape — but it may not automatically include two of its most iconic players. As Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma approach their 40s, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to sit down with the senior duo for what has been described as “honest and professional conversations” about their future in the 50-over format.
According to a report by PTI, the board is expected to speak with both players ahead of the next ODI cycle to assess their mental and physical readiness, and how they align with India’s evolving plans for the tournament.
Age, game time, and India’s youth surge create uncertainty
While Kohli and Rohit announced their retirement from T20Is after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, and stepped away from Test cricket shortly after, many had speculated their decisions were designed to prolong their ODI careers and make one final push for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
But the landscape is shifting quickly. India is undergoing a generational shift across formats, with emerging stars like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Washington Sundar making compelling cases for long-term selection. As the ODI team evolves, space in the squad is becoming more competitive — and Kohli and Rohit’s age and availability may become limiting factors.
“This is something that will be discussed soon. The next World Cup is still over two years away, scheduled for November 2027, by which time both Kohli and Rohit will be close to 40. A clear strategy is needed as we prepare for the tournament, especially since our last World Cup victory came in 2011. It’s also important to provide opportunities to younger players,” a BCCI source told PTI.
Limited ODIs and patchy availability could hurt comeback hopes
Another challenge facing both veterans is match rhythm. Between now and the end of 2026, India is scheduled to play just 27 ODIs — many of them spaced out and interspersed with Tests and T20Is. Kohli and Rohit are likely to appear selectively, which could affect their form and momentum heading into a high-stakes tournament.
India’s upcoming fixtures include a three-match ODI series against Australia in October, followed by three ODIs each against South Africa and New Zealand. In early 2026, the team is also set to face England in three ODIs. However, both stars have not featured in international cricket since the Champions Trophy in March, and under current BCCI selection policy, fully fit players are expected to participate in domestic cricket to remain eligible.
‘No pressure’ but tough conversations ahead
Despite the uncertainty, the BCCI is expected to handle the situation with full respect for the players’ legacies. The board is not planning to pressure either Kohli or Rohit into retirement but wants clarity on their intentions and readiness as part of a long-term strategy.
“Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don’t think anybody is going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that,” the BCCI source added.
With the 2027 World Cup still over two years away, there’s time for decisions to evolve — but the conversations around India’s future are beginning now, and the path ahead for two legends may be anything but certain.
