The future of the Asia Cup 2025 will be determined later this month, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gears up for a critical Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting scheduled for July 25-26 in Dhaka.
The 17-day tournament is tentatively set to begin on September 5, with the marquee India vs Pakistan clash expected on September 7. However, India’s participation in the tournament—particularly in a match against Pakistan—is still subject to clearance from the Indian government.
Political tensions raise doubts over India’s participation
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated in recent weeks, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam attack. This has led to widespread speculation that India may withdraw from matches against Pakistan in global tournaments, including the Asia Cup.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saika dismissed such claims at the time, stating:
“Since this morning, it has come to our notice some news items about BCCI’s decision not to participate in the Asia Cup and Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both ACC’s events. Such news is devoid of any truth as till now, BCCI has not even discussed or taken any such steps regarding ensuing ACC events, let alone written anything to the ACC,” as quoted by news agency PTI.
This clarification signaled a possible softening of India’s stance, with growing indications that the team may indeed continue participating in ICC and ACC events featuring Pakistan.
BCCI vice president to lead India’s delegation at ACC meeting
According to a report by Gaurav Gupta of the Times of India, BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla will represent India at the crucial ACC meeting in Dhaka. A final decision on India’s participation and the Asia Cup’s logistics is expected during the two-day summit.
UAE likely to host tournament moved from India
Although India is the designated host for the 2025 edition, the tournament is expected to be relocated, with the UAE emerging as the frontrunner to stage the event. This follows a familiar pattern, as recent editions of the Asia Cup have also been moved out of the host country due to geopolitical tensions and logistical considerations.
Multiple India-Pakistan matches possible under current format
The Asia Cup 2025 will be played in the T20 format and split into two phases—group stage and Super 4s. If both India and Pakistan advance past the group stage, fans could be treated to more than one high-stakes India-Pakistan encounter in the same tournament. The final is currently scheduled for September 21.
