Uncertainty has emerged over the venue for the IPL 2026 final, with Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium now at risk of losing hosting rights due to an escalating ticket allocation controversy, according to a report by ANI. The development comes despite the venue being the expected choice for the title clash, given Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s status as defending champions and the league’s long-standing preference to stage finals at the reigning winner’s home ground.
Ticket row disrupts venue plans
The issue centres around demands from legislators in Karnataka seeking guaranteed access to match tickets, which has triggered administrative complications and public criticism. The controversy began ahead of the season’s opening fixture when Vijayanand Kashappanavar, a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly (“MLA”), argued that elected representatives should receive a fixed quota, citing their status and role.
Following the escalation, the state government entered discussions with the Karnataka State Cricket Association in an attempt to resolve the matter. D. K. Shivakumar later indicated that MLAs and MPs would be allocated three tickets each for league matches, alongside additional provisions for international fixtures.
BCCI keeps relocation option open
The situation has now drawn the attention of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which is yet to finalise venues for the playoff stage. While Bengaluru remains under consideration, unresolved concerns around ticket distribution could force a late change in plans.
A source told ANI, “IPL 2026 playoffs and final venue will be announced soon. Matches likely to be divided into Punjab and Karnataka, the last time winner should host the final, but MLA ticket issue is creating problems in Bengaluru, and if there is no solution, then BCCI will move the final to another city.”
Governance concerns and fan reaction
The dispute has also led to wider debate around access and fairness, with supporters voicing concerns over preferential treatment and the broader impact on ticket availability. Tensions between authorities and administrators have persisted, with no outcome yet satisfying all stakeholders involved in the process.
G. Parameshwara addressed the situation by clarifying that tickets are issued through official channels and restricted to personal use, with transfers not permitted beyond immediate family members.
Alternative venues in contention
If the impasse continues, organisers may shift the final to another established venue. Options under consideration include the Narendra Modi Stadium, Eden Gardens, and Wankhede Stadium, all of which have hosted major fixtures in previous editions.
